THE DESCENDANTS OF EBENEZER TREDGETT Ebenezer Tredgett lived with his first family in a house that was built for him at 312 Histon Road, North Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, (the house still stands). He operated nurseries on the opposite side of the road (the area is now subdivided) and a shop at 31 Market Hill, in the market centre of Cambridge (the building still stands). He married Sarah Careless (b: December 27, 1846 Cambridge, d: August 12, 1905 in Cambridge), on August 23, 1866 in the Eden Chapel of Particular Baptists, Cambridge. She was buried in the Histon Road cemetery, where her gravestone still stands. They had eleven children, with it is understood, a twelfth who died in infancy. This existence of this family was unknown to most of the second family [ Turners ] for almost 100 years.

At the time of the 1881 census, Ebenezer Tredgett employed nine men and three boys. Ray had the impression that he was a Fellow of the Royal Horticultural Society.
Joyce Barrett was told by her mother that Ebenezer took all the money from the bank the day he left. The eldest daughters wrote to their father in NZ.
Harry continued the business but his wife Kate was so disliked by the rest of the family that they bought Harry out. This split led to the break up of the nursery. Harry then opened a shop which was not a success.
Frederick was killed in a shooting accident in 1901 when trying out a new gun. He was buried with Sarah.
Jessie emigrated to South Africa somewhere after 1902.
Ebenezer suffered badly in the first World War. His wife did not live with him again and he took his own life by poison.

The building on the right is called "Scotsdale" or Cemetery Lodge (60-62 Histon Road, at the entrance to the Histon Road Cemetery) and was formerly a laundry and the glasshouses of Tredgett's Nurseries. The cemetery entrance is to the left of the building. "Johns Shops" at 297 Histon Road are also on old Tredgett property.
