HUIA PRIVATE RESERVE.

Scroll down for photographs.

In late 1889, Edward Turner purchased land at Little Huia on the Manukau Harbour, with the intention of living there and developing an orchard. The land included Jackys Peak, a unique volcanic cone.
His purchase included Allotment 33 by Deed dated 1 August 1889 - area 105 acres, price 60 pounds, and
Allotment 35 by Deed dated 30 October 1889 - area 80 acres, price 84 pounds.
These were rectangular blocks at right angles to each other. Lot 33 is halfway up the valley and extended across the valley to the north. One of the small sides of Allotment 35 adjoined Allotment 33. Lot 35 contained Jacky's Peak. This block was first owned by John Wade, otherwise known as Jacky Marama.
The land has since been partly subdivided and sold, but the peak itself has been retained in family ownership ever since.

For more information about Jackys Peak, see Jackys Peak

In 1939 a private company was registered as a means of holding ownership of the land: Huia Private Reserve. The company continues. At the time of its inception, an investment was made that was intended to be sufficient to cover the running costs of the property, and this still is the case. Some of the family manage the land in association with other land that they own.

The company share holding has recently been widened with the intention that all of the family sub-branches should be represented.
The company has encouraged all the nine branches (based on Edward and Maude's nine sons) to retain their shareholdings and thereby their link with the old family land and with each other. It also has a policy that no single branch may own more than 20% of the Company's shares and that each branch is entitled to nominate one Director as its representative.

The directors and the branch shares are:

Eb branch: Clifford Turner (1.1.1), 3100 shares

Phil branch: Barry Hinton (2.1.1.1), 8500 shares
Harvey branch: Jeffery Turner (3.1.3), Chair, 13500 shares
Bert branch: Max Turner (4.3.1), 6300 shares
Del branch: Lindsay Turner (5.1), 1000 shares
Ernest branch: Kenneth Turner (6.4.1), 13500 shares
Ray branch: Helen Turner (7.1.4), 13500 shares
Frank branch: Beth Wood (8.1), 7100 shares
Sel branch: Wayne Turner (9.1), 1000 shares
